July 16 @ 5:30 pm 8:00 pm

Join us for our annual Public Relations (PR) & Scholarship Award Dinner. If you can only attend one event this year, this is the one!

Our event will be at Harbor House located in Seaport Village. James Dahlberg, General Manager has assured me that they are able to provide a safe environment for us to hold our annual event. Harbor House will allow us to use the larger room and will be setting up large tables and will only seat 4 to a table to keep social distancing and will have the tables at 6 feet intervals. Mask will be required until you have been seated at your table and will be required if you move about. You can also request to be seated with certain people. Harbor House will let me know if there are any changes due to the Covid-19 and I’ll pass this along to all of those who plan on attending as we get closer to our July 16th date.

Agenda

This year we are honored to have Barbara Gunning who will speaking on Introvert or Extrovert? Learn the differences between Introverts and Extroverts and why it is important for your team.

At this event will be hosting our Scholarship Winners so you will get the opportunity to meet them and learn how much you’ve helped each of them just by purchasing Scholarship tickets each month.

As our current AFWA San Diego Chapter’s Current Board of Officers & Directors step down please take the time to say thank you to each of them for their hard work and dedication for the past year in helping to bringing you all of the wonderful events, speakers, and donations for the scholarship fund.

We will install the new AFWA San Diego Chapter’s Board of Officers & Directors for the July 2020 – June 2021 term.

Guest Speaker

Introvert or Extrovert?

Who’s happier? More successful? Valued more?

According to Susan Cain, best-selling author, the innate preference between introvert and extrovert is as important in defining your personality as gender or race. Since the population is equally split between Extroverts and Introverts, there is a good chance that you’re interacting with your polar opposite every day. Knowing how to bring out the best in others is a critical component of leading a high-performing team. Learn the differences between Introverts and Extroverts and why it is important for your team.

eDiscovery for the Non-Legal Professional

January 16 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm

In today’s digital world, almost everything leaves an electronic footprint.  This allows for attorneys in litigation to dig through more evidence than ever, known as eDiscovery.

Because of how rapidly technology develops, non-legal professionals should be aware of the nuances of eDiscovery to help their clients.  An overview of eDiscovery will be presented wth a short scenario to illustrate how eDiscovery works in litigation.

eDiscovery for the Non-Legal Professional

Christine Stansall began her legal career after graduating from UC San Diego and obtaining her paralegal certificate from University of San Diego’s ABA-approved program in 1995. In her 20 years a paralegal, she went on to earn the Certified Paralegal and Advanced Certified Paralegal certifications in multiple areas of law from the National Association of Legal Assistants, and the California Advanced Specialist in Discovery from the Commission for Certification of California Paralegals.

Ms. Stansall’s traditional paralegal career evolved into E-Discovery and litigation support when she found she enjoyed combining tech know-how with her legal training. In 2015, she earned the title of ACEDS Fellow from the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists program through UC Irvine’s E-Discovery program, then followed up with the CEDS credential in 2017. Currently, she is the Litigation Support Analyst at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch where she assists the legal teams in every phase of litigation, from legal holds, collections, early case assessments, document review, productions, motions practice, to trial presentations. Ms. Stansall is trained to use Relativity, Eclipse, CaseMap, TextMap, TimeMap, Trial Director, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and PowerPoint. She advocates for using project management principles in E-Discovery processes for defensibility and proportionality in a matter.

Ms. Stansall is a member of the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists and the San Diego chapter of the Women in Ediscovery. She is on the advisory board for the UC San Diego Extension’s E-Discovery and Litigation Technology program. She regularly attends the monthly San Diego ESI Forum sessions and believes in always learning because litigation is always evolving.

Vice President’s Notes: For those of you who were unable to attend last month’s Fire Awareness & Preparedness presentation by Captain Dave Hardenburg you missed an information packed event!  Dave gave us a lot of useful information on protecting our homes but more importantly he gave us a lot of insight on what the fire fighter are doing
during a wild fire. How they protect first and foremost human life then property.  It is so amazing that these brave men and women put their lives at risk doing their job.  I can’t express how appreciative and grateful I am for these brave firefighters especially
as I experienced the Cedar/Crest fires first hand as the fire came
through my property.  Thankfully our home and our neighbor’s
homes were spared. I look forward to seeing everyone next week!  Bring a friend!

Dinner & Speaker – Fire Capt. Hardenburger “Fire Awareness & Preparedness”

September 19 @ 5:30 pm 8:00 pm

Dinner & Speaker – Fire Capt. Hardenburger

“Fire Awareness & Preparedness”

Developing a Home Protection Plan the goal of an effective wildfire protection plan is to keep the fire from coming close to any building on your property. • Clean out gutters • Removed dead vegetation & low branches • Inspect condition & attachment of screening on windows, vents in the attic, and crawl spaces • Move lumber and firewood to a location more than 30 feet from home, deck, or buildings • Replace untreated wood shake roof • Replace Box-in-eaves that have an open eave construction • Replace single-pane windows with multi-pane, tempered glass windows • Screen all windows. Defensible space zones • 0-5 feet from home-install hard surfaces & avoid combustible mulch products • 5-30 feet from home-locate all outbuildings at least 30 feet from home, plants should be maintained & well spaced • 30-100 (or property line) keep all trees & bushes will maintained. Trees should be 10 feet apart Home/property preparedness • Preparedness in the event of a large incident • Evacuations, shelter in place, escape routes • What you should take with you Dave also thinks it’s also important for people to know what the fire fighters are doing during these incidents so everyone can manage expectations appropriately. Dave will explain what would be happening during a wild fire. Dinner & Speaker - Fire Capt. Hardenburger "Fire Awareness & Preparedness" Dave Hardenburger is a Fire Captain and a Paramedic for a San Diego area Fire Dept. Dave has been in the Fire Service for 26 years. During that time Dave has been involved in Hazardous Materials, Rescue, Truck Company operations, wildland and firefighting, and implementing a Paramedic program. Don’t forget to Pre-Buy Your Scholarship Tickets President’s Note: Thank you to all of you who attended last month’s event at the Bali Hai with our guest speaker Christine Zoumas. I learned so much from her about the different types of diets and finding which one works for you. It’s a sad fact but as we age we need less calories (mostly due to loss of muscle and less active) so we need to find what works best for our bodies to keep healthy (lots of veggies, fruits, whole grans, and lean protein), keep those extra pounds from sneaking on think Mediterranean, and move more (150-300 minutes or 5 hours of weekly moderate-intensity movement with muscle-strengthening activities). Find Healthy Habits! Make AFWA your healthy habit as we hit most of the habits you need to be happy! * Time Management * Self-Monitoring * Goal-setting * Benefits and costs * Social Support * Alternative Behaviors * Positive self-talk * Environmental control * Thought-stopping * Planning * Stimulus control * Enjoyment * Convenience * Alternative behaviors * Self-nurturing behaviors * Stress Management Just look at these Happy Attendees!
